Gurkha antiques Kabul to Kandahar Star, "SEPOY DEB SINGH BHUNDARIE * 4TH GOORKKHA REGT * ." Awarded for service during 2nd Afghan War, 1878-1880 and is made from captured enemy guns during the battle of Kandahar. The colorful ribbon is influenced from the early Indian medals as is commonly called “sunrise in the east.” The need to relieve the besieged city of Kandahar following the defeat at Maiwand led to the dispatch from Kabul of a column under General Roberts. The epic “Kabul to Kandahar march” was one of the most famous military events of its day. The relief force consisted of 10,000 troops travelling at great speed through a very dangerous and hostile country before defeating the Afghan army outside Kandahar on 1st September 1880. The 2nd, 4th and 5th Goorkha (Gurkha) Rifles partook in the 2nd Afghan War. Those who partook in the march were rewarded with the distinctive Kabul to Kadahar Star. The North West Frontier (NWF) Area was to become a major active service area for most Gurkhas between 1839-1947. General Sir Roberts served as the first Colonel of the 5th Gurkha Rifles and in his Coat of Arms a Gurkha soldier of the 5th Gurkha Rifles is found. nepal india british gurkhas afghanistan sirkukri kukri

India General Service Medals (IGSM)-

The General Service Medal became the norm for service all over the Empire and beyond in the mid-late 19th Century.

The idea of the General Service Medal was to give entitled personnel an initial medal and named or dated clasp. Subsequent service in the same area would be rewarded with an extra clasp or clasps added to the existing medal and denoting service in that campaign at that time. Soldiers who often saw active service in one geographical area would receive just one medal, but may in the end carry several clasps covering a number of separate small scale campaigns over a wide range of time.

The IGSM represent a great deal of hard campaigning and at times involved rather large military forces, though small scale compared to the Great Wars.

From a medallic point of view it marks the end of Britain´s involvement with hostile frontier tribes that had been a “issue” for the British for almost a century.

Clasp - North West Frontier 1936-37, for fighting in Waziristan against Fakir of Ipi during 1936-37.

World War II Military Medals -

Medals were issued on general basis, much alike WW1, in this case theatre to theatre, rather than seeking to reward individually a multiplicity of actions and engagements. This resulted in eight (8) different campaign stars and 2 medals.

The campaign stars, in copper-zink alloy, are identical except for the “theatre” wording. No one could be awarded more than five (now six) campaign stars and no one could be awarded more than one clasp to any one-campaign star.
